Joe Rosner – Guest Speaker, May 28, 2009

Our guest speaker at the CPAAAS General Meeting on May 28th was Joe Rosner who is the Director of Best Defense of Illinois. Best Defense teaches children, teens and adults strategies, tactics and techniques to avoid being victimized by violent or sexual predators.

Joe began his presentation by telling us to remember three things: be aware, run away and get help.

Joe suggested we do try the following if threatened:

Get attention by yelling
Identify the problem, i.e., “I’m being attacked”
Solution - call 911
Lie to your attacker to create a diversion to buy you time
Put a barrier between you and attacker, i.e., table, couch
Grab onto something if you are being pulled or dragged away by someone
Learn self-defense to get away from attacker

Joe demonstrated 3 basic self-defense tactics:
1 – non-verbal: stand sideways with both hands up, palms facing attacker
2 – verbal: tell attacker to stop, back off
3 – physical: kick attacker’s knee cap, then shin, then stomp on foot
Joe advised that we practice these steps so that they come natural to us when we need them.

At the end of Joe’s presentation, he offered discounts to all Alumni on the Spitfire products he brought with him to the meeting.

The presentation was a great refresher course for those of us who haven’t been to the CPA class in a long time.
