CPAAAS Wins 2001 Volunteer of the Year Award
A Shelter Inc. volunteer and a group of Citizens Police Academy alumni are the village's volunteers of the year.
Nelson McRoberts, a retired United Airlines mechanic, and the Citizens Police Academy Alumni Association of Schaumburg were named volunteers of the year at an awards luncheon April 19 at the Schaumburg Marriott Hotel.
Deloris Jordan, mother of former Chicago Bulls star Michael Jordan, was the event?s keynote speaker.
McRoberts and Carmen Anguiano, president of the academy alumni association, expressed shock at being named award winners.
"I'm speechless. I'm really at a loss for words. I almost fell to the floor", McRoberts said after the luncheon.
McRoberts has volunteered with Shelter Inc. since 1996 after retiring from United Airlines.
He said he found out about Shelter Inc. from a local newspaper and inquired about volunteer opportunities.
"When I retired, I needed to fill in some time, he said. It worked out for me. It wasn't a strict schedule."
He drives all over the northwest suburbs, picking up furniture and boxes of donations and delivering them to the Shelter Inc. Thrift Shop in Schaumburg or to the shop's storage facilities.
He volunteers for the organization's charity ball, golf outings and Holiday Gift Giving program by picking up donations from companies and retail stores.
He organizes and monitors the storage facilities and moves hundreds of boxes from the facilities to the shop. All proceeds from the shop benefit the children served by Shelter.
Shelter Inc. has provided emergency and temporary care and housing for abused and neglected children in Chicago's northwest suburbs since 1975.
According to the nomination submitted by Shelter?s volunteer coordinator, Natercia Medrano, McRoberts also does repair and maintenance projects for the thrift shop and Shelter?s offices in Arlington Heights.
She said McRoberts has saved the thrift shop hundreds, if not thousands of dollars in repairs, upkeep and maintenance of the shop.
Shelter's development director, Carol D. Brown, said, "We are so grateful to him".
McRoberts said of the award, "It's a definite honor".
When Village President Al Larson announced the Citizens Police Academy Alumni Association of Schaumburg had won volunteer organization of the year honors, the association's president almost couldn?t contain herself.
"I was wondering if I was dreaming", said Carmen Anguiano, who accepted the award for the association.
Roxane Bevenuti, the village's special events coordinator, said of Anguiano?s reaction, "She looked like she won a Grammy."
The association is relatively young, having become a nonprofit organization in January 1999. Anguiano said she and other grads of the Citizens Police Academy felt they needed to do something after graduating.
"We wanted to give something back. When we were finished, we thought this can't be it, not with all this knowledge we have."
The group has 90 dues-paying members.
Since its inception, association members have volunteered their time at Septemberfest, the Police Department's Cops and Lobsters events and child car safety seat checkpoints, among other things. They also conducted tours of the police station at this year's department open house.
With some 700 people attending the open house, Lt. Dennis Carroll said the association members' participation was invaluable.
"We couldn?t have done it without them", he said.
Carroll nominated the organization for the award. He added that the association has raised money to buy bicycle helmets for the department's bike patrol.

CPAAAS Participates in Food Drive
In May of 2001, letter carriers from the Schaumburg Post Office and local boy scout troops teamed up to collect more than 29,000 pounds of food to feed needy familes in Schaumburg Township.
Local letter carriers collected canned goods and non-perishable food items that residents left by their mailboxes on May 12. The "Stamp Out Hunger" nationwide food drive, now in its eighth year, is sponsored by the National Association of Letter Carriers. Special thanks to go Don Spengler from the Schaumburg Post Office for coordinating this very successful good drive in Schaumburg Township.
Local boy scout troops held their annual "Scouting for Food" drive on the same weekend and delivered the food donations to th epost office in order to coordinate the two food drives. The end result was hundreds of boxes of food donated to the Schaumburg Township food pantry.
A small army of volunteers from the Citizen Police Academy Alumni Association of Schaumburg, coordinated by Carmen Anguiano, spent the day helping letter carriers unload donated food items from their trucks and worked on the post office loading dock until 8:00PM on collection day to organize and box the food donations.
"We couldn't have done it without the Citizen Police Academy volunteers," said Schaumburg Township General Assistance Director Sandy Wolf. "The food donations filled an entire room from floor to ceiling."
The letter carriers estimate that twice as much food was given to the Township this year compared to the previous year.
"The two food drives combined will be enough to provide a week's food for 400 local needy families." Wolf said. "It was an amazing community effort to provide food for residents who depend on our food pantry in times of need."

Shop with a Cop
On 9/9/2001, a number of Alumni arrived at the Schaumburg Police Department (SPD at 6am, got on school busses and picked up 24 children.
All the school busses arrived at Target at 7am and met more Alumni volunteers. The SPD staff and Officers took each child and shopped for Christmas gifts for their families. We then wrapped their gifts. After some donuts, we got back on the busses and took the children home.
It was a great time and all the children seemed so excited and happy to have had the opportunity to shop with a cop.
Thanks to all the volunteers who got up early to help out with the program.

Wrap Party
On Sunday, December 16th, the Mydlach's hosted the Christmas Wrapping Party for all the alumni who bought gifts for the 7 families that we adopted for Christmas.
You couldn't turn around without bumping into people and elbows, wrapping paper, boxes and tape. It was a blast! (I ate too many sweets, though!).
Thank you to everyone who donated money and time to make our adopted families have a wonderful Christmas!
