Schaumburg Volunteer of the Year 2001
NOMINATION FORM
Name: Citizens Police Academy Alumni Association
Address: 1000 West Schaumburg Road; Schaumburg, Illinois 60194
Name of Nominator: Lt. Dennis Carroll
The Citizens Police Academy Alumni Association (CPAAAS) was organized in June 1998, and became a
not for profit organization on January 1, 1999. The main catalysts that formalized this organization were
Citizen Police Academy graduates who wanted to continue their relationship with the police
department and village after completing the twelve week Citizens Policy Academy. Since their inception, CPAAAS
members have volunteered their time and talents to the benefit of the police department
and to the village. Based on the events the Citizens Police Academy Alumni Association has
volunteered their time in the past year, I have estimated they have volunteered over 1300
hours of their time in the past year.
Examples of how CPAAAS members have volunteered during our events and programs are as follows:
-
Sponsored a plaque honoring the police department Canine handlers and the K-9's. This
plaque is prominently displayed in our community room.
-
Initiated the 'Angel Fund' in the memory of Ross Angel the first CPAAAS President who passed away
from cancer. This fund has provided the police department with helmets for our summer
bicycle patrol.
-
During Septemberfest CPAAAS walked with the Police Department during the Labor Day Parade.
CPAAAS members attended training on how to operate our button making machine and how to
fingerprint children for the Kid ID program. Then then organized and set up our button
making display at the Crime Prevention/Community Relations Unit booth during Septemberfest.
Members assisted visitor bus arrival and departure, and in cleaning the part area after the
fireworks.
-
Assists the police department Child Passenger Seat technicians with our Child Safety Seat
Checkpoints. A CPAAAS member has become a certified technician on her own time.
-
Assisted the Crime Prevention/Community Relations unit at the Law Enforcement Expo at the
Randhurst Mall. Members distributed brochures and made McGruff buttons for the children
that attended.
-
Constantly work as ambassadors of the police department to the village and residents. Having
attended the CPA, the members have build relationships with the officers and have been
educated in how our police department serves the community. This relationship serves as
an educational venue for all other residents and non-residents that may have misunderstandings
on law enforcement.
-
Volunteer their time and seek donations to assist those residents of the Township that
require food, clothing, and assistance that otherwise would not have been provided.
-
Organized events with Jewel Osco, Dominick's, and Carson Pirie Scott to seek charitable
donations.
-
Assisted with our National Night Out program. Put together community event packages and
particated during this National Crime Prevention Awareness event.
-
Assisted the Crime Prevention/Community Relations unit in conducting a YMCA Healthy Kid's Day.
-
Provided assistance during our annual Open House Event. CPAAAS members conducted tours, assisted
guests and provided support during the many demonstrations. Twenty-nine members were in
attendance and CPAAAS received a letter of appreciation from Chief of Police, Richard S. Casler.
-
CPAAAS membes have been the first to apply for and be recommended as our first Volunteer group
to be implemented at the police department.
-
Participated in the Village Clean Up Day.
-
Numerous members participated in our Shop with a Cop event which benefits children of the community.
-
In recognition of their volunteer work with the Schaumburg Township, CPAAAS received the Friend
of Schaumburg Township Award on March 15, 2001.
-
Volunteered for the IPAC/CALEA Conference hosted by the Police Department. CPAAAS members
welcomed guests and assisted with conference registration.
-
CPAAAS members put together all of the manuals that are used for the CPA classes.
-
CPAAAS participated in Special Olympics Cops & Lobsters fund raising event.
The Citizens Police Academy Alumni Association have become ambassadors of the police
department and to the community in which we serve. Their dedication to volunteering and the
contributions to the community make them excellent candidates for Volunteer of the Year.
Sincerely,
Lt. Dennis Carroll
