CPAAAS Participates in Food Drive

Food DriveIn May of 2001, letter carriers from the Schaumburg Post Office and local boy scout troops teamed up to collect more than 29,000 pounds of food to feed needy familes in Schaumburg Township.

Local letter carriers collected canned goods and non-perishable food items that residents left by their mailboxes on May 12. The "Stamp Out Hunger" nationwide food drive, now in its eighth year, is sponsored by the National Association of Letter Carriers. Special thanks to go Don Spengler from the Schaumburg Post Office for coordinating this very successful good drive in Schaumburg Township.

Local boy scout troops held their annual "Scouting for Food" drive on the same weekend and delivered the food donations to th epost office in order to coordinate the two food drives. The end result was hundreds of boxes of food donated to the Schaumburg Township food pantry.

A small army of volunteers from the Citizen Police Academy Alumni Association of Schaumburg, coordinated by Carmen Anguiano, spent the day helping letter carriers unload donated food items from their trucks and worked on the post office loading dock until 8:00PM on collection day to organize and box the food donations.

"We couldn't have done it without the Citizen Police Academy volunteers," said Schaumburg Township General Assistance Director Sandy Wolf. "The food donations filled an entire room from floor to ceiling."

The letter carriers estimate that twice as much food was given to the Township this year compared to the previous year.

"The two food drives combined will be enough to provide a week's food for 400 local needy families." Wolf said. "It was an amazing community effort to provide food for residents who depend on our food pantry in times of need."
